You stay calm they will calm down too. It's like if on a scale from 1-10, 1 being nuclear, 10 being Buddha, if you are at a 10 and they try to bring you down to an 8, if you follow it'll keep descending. They want to be 2 lower than you, so then 6, 4, till it's gone nuclear.
But if you stay at a 10, they have to stay at a 8, no reason to go lower. Then eventually, instead of taking the easy road down with them, they are forced to take the road up with you.
