Online Discourse: 2025-06-30
Online can be hard to have discourse. I think personally I do better online, because I study so much how people interact so I know how to say or type things better because I look at how they can be seen by various points of view. We do lose verbal and audio cues online, but that was not something I was ever good at. I always try to assume the best intents of others, what's the best way that phrase could be taken, and when in doubt ask questions.
Often people will make an emotional appeal instead of a rational, reasonable, or logical appeal. Not so much on facts, but feelings. This kind of appeal gets more personally invested, so when you attack or discredit the idea or opinion, they feel you are attacking them. There are ways to phrase things, try to find a part of it you agree with, even if it's just an aspect of a premise, start with that then build on that to make your counter comment, while trying to keep their frame of reference in mind.
