Musings 2025: 2025-08-24
These are comments I've made over the last month I've decided to save, not really edited just thrown here.
Not liberal but left, most conservative belief is tough on crime, we need social assistance and focus on preventative measures, but we also need that stick. Bike theft prevention isn't just about better locks, or taking people out of poverty, but bait bike programs, and going after chop shops and pawn stores, and those 1% doing 90% of the crime, heavily.
Things happen, but if you prepare you lower the risk of it affecting you. Yes eventually we all die, but we can lower risks, and it may be the 11th or 12th that gets him, but without being prepared it would have been the third, so now he could have a few more decades to live life for what it is, living.
People upset with "Copycat" Carney for doing what he said would do, apparently conservative ideas reminds me back in elementary school that idea that you can take someone's idea and it's a bad thing. Instead of working together you get upset that they are doing what you want. It's insane, you get what you want but it's still not enough, like our parties should be able to work together and agree on things sometimes, we want them to. This is where the cons have gone wrong for years, instead of working together for a better Canada it's an us vs them mentality where they need to always be opposed to anything the other side does, instead of agreeing and working together on things, they either get upset for "stolen ideas" or change what they want or rally against what they used to want because its more important to oppose to them than to support a good idea for its own merit.
I dislike Carney because he is ignoring our climate crisis, hasn't been tough on America, repealing taxes that should be in place, ignoring indigenous rights to consultations, and cutting the public sector to invest in private sector when he should be working hard to keep our public sector strong. Fund the CBC more, and never mind the recent debacle of not being fair to air Canada flight attendants with that back to work order.
Oh wow this! So often they get shocked when I stop supporting someone because of their actions, and they ask "Well where's your loyalty" or say I flip/flop my position, while my position stays the same (or changes on new information) my support will end as that person no longer aligns with my position.
For them it's pick a side and stay there. Once you support them you keep supporting them, and adjust views/events based on what is said, instead of look critically at this person. This is why they say the left always attacks each other, because they hold people accountable.
For them though it's if you are in that "in" crowd, it's not that you can do no wrong, but any wrong doing is excusable, or turn an eye to out of loyalty, until they are no longer in the crowd, then they snap and turn so quick no longer blind eyeing everything they've allowed before.
They value blind loyalty above all else.
It's weird feeling people not getting pop culture references from your youth that you felt was wide spread. Growing up we all watched the same shows, there was only so much media so we all kind of knew the same stories. Now there is so much we only know the most popular, and it is always churning new content so it doesn't stay around as long, don't see the re runs as many times. Seen some episodes of Simpsons dozens of times waiting for new ones. Now no one seems to know Mike from Canmore reference. Good Canadian content. Used to be we saw so much more Canadian content, now we get swarmed with American content. Royal Canadian Air Farce, don't see re runs anymore, world moves on and we try to see newest programs over and over, shows that would run for decades move to the shadows and memory to be forgotten in a generation, while my parents or grandparents shows would last for decades, I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, Hogans Heroes. I saw so many old shows. All in the family, along with new childhood, now my kids don't see re runs, Star Trek, I remember watching original series so much.
Like it when politics, as I remember it, was disagreeing on what was best for the country and people moving forward. Like you might be angry with other side for disagreeing and not understanding, but now it feels more it's about hate. The cons don't push policies because they think it's best for Canada or it will help people, they do it because they want to "own the libs". They do it out of anger and hate, they don't care if there is more suffering as long as makes the "other side" suffer. Their policies are to oppose what others propose, and to move backwards or into hate, not to help people but to harm, and the harm is the point.
I stand firmly with the workers and unions. They have the right to strike at a for profit company and the government should not take that away. They should be paid for hours worked, that is the Canadian way, you work, you get paid. I am incredibly disappointed in the liberals for demanding flight attendants go back to work 12 hours after the strike started. They would at least used to give workers a few weeks to strike before moving in. If Air Canada is such an essential service then it should be a public service and ran with government benefits and wages for the employees, not for large corporations to make more profits. If it isn't essential then the government has no right to tell them they can not strike. Absolutely disgusting in my opinion to violate their right to strike.
Yes I would rather support someone who is decent on 90% of the issues, demonstrates empathy and compassion and a desire to learn and understand, then someone who is good on 1 very important issue but for the wrong reasons and who is horrible on 99% of the other issues.
Why excuse the behaviour? Because of the medium? Regardless of the medium we should all try to be decent to one another and push for that, better understanding. If you start to expect bullying and normalize it, then that just allows behaviour to shift more and more allowing things we don't currently tolerate to be tolerable.
To the comment I deleted, yeah sure everything is a joke until it actually happens. We don't joke about invading other countries. Reminds me of the bullies back in school "it was just a joke, don't get so mad". Don't invalidate our feelings, we have a right to be upset at the rhetoric and to meet violin essence with violin essence. What happened to leaders who had a stately grace, who could talk with intelligence and poise. America has abandoned that. They prefer pundits to journalists.
So many get hung up on trying to find a solution, 1 solution, when most issues need a multi faceted approach. It isn't dropping the stick for the carrot, it's the carrot and the stick.
Very well put. I usually don't speak on the issue because it feels no one will listen and everyone just gets upset. Israel has a right to exist, not expand. Palestine has a right to exist and should be a free and safe people. People in Israel deserve to feel safe. It is a very messed up modern war to fight where the current leaders seem to want civilians, their people, to die so they can rally their cause. No Palestinian deserves to die or live in these conditions, no Israeli deserves to die or live in fear. Hamas needs to be removed and there needs to be a strong re building effort, education, compassion, but I really don't know if it can happen with so much history of hate. Eventually people need to put down their weapons or people just keep dying.
I think we can have amenities close by without falling into gated communities. I want to be able to send my kids grocery shopping or to the hardware store, I want them to be able to walk or bike where they need to go and feel safe. We can build communities that meet our needs without restricting how we travel.
Cancer is a lot more prevalent, more people are being diagnosed and rates are up. We are better at treating it and a lot more people survive, but as rates are up with more people getting it, while a larger percentage does well, the amount still goes up. We have been poisoning our planet for decades, all that is in the air, think of all the cars in the city, all the factories, our water, our food. China has low standards for food, especially exports, and now the US has dropped their standards and inspections of food. Micro plastics that we can't filter out anymore. I don't think it's malicious, more apathetic, society is built to keep profits churning in ever increasing margins, they have to do that somehow, even at the cost of our planet and our species. I'm not sure I would have had kids if I knew then what I knew now.
Because it isn't about money to them really, it's about the mentality, they would rather have 100 people go without then one person go with who didn't deserve it. Versus people who would rather help 100 people even if 1 person doesn't qualify, at least they are being helped.
